What files can I delete in "common files"

Well, my Program Files\Common Files folder only has about 130MB in it - even if you'd delete everything there (and probably disable most of your installed applications in the process), you wouldn't free up a whole lot of files.
Check out:
Program Files\Online Services (delete this folder)
Temporary directories; these vary by PC. Usually they might be in Documents and Settings\%your username%\temp or thereabouts.
Temporary Internet files - some people never delete these; I've seen PC's with many thousands of files in this folder.

What sorts of files do you need to make room for? Maybe you'll just need a bigger hard drive; you can usually snag a pretty good deal at the FS/T forum; I've seen 120GB HD's there for $100 shipped, though they usually run closer to $110 shipped. Someone's got 3 80GB drives for $70 each here. You might find a better deal in Hot Deals, but in FS/T, you don't have to worry about never getting a rebate check.
