i graduated college w/ a degree in MIS (management information systems) and i've been job hunting. i'm working a part time job to fill the time and earn money, but i still have lots of free time so i'm thinking of studying something to make myself more marketable. any suggestions on what to get into? i suppose this is the obligatory, "what's hot now?" question.

:)

how long does it usually take to get these certifications?

also, are certifications in general highly regarded these days?

well, if everyone has them....does that diminish their values, thus i shouldn't bother....or should i get them since that's the minimum?

Well, I would suggest getting your feet wet with either Net+ or Sec+ (or both) then think about the Cisco certs.

Have you thought about pursuing MIS work at a law firm? I know that our law firm and firms around the city are always looking for competent folks in that regard. There seems to be a niche of lawfirm-related MIS guys and they make six figures.

If you aren't in NYC or some other big city, I'm not sure what the pay scale or job availability would be, but its hopping in NYC.

Or go back to school for your MBA. By doing MIS that is one of the purposes of the MIS degree, to bring in managers that are tech savvy.

Spiffy...my old Oracle instructor at AU co-authored that 2005 Auburn Study. One of the hardest and best professors I ever had (Thomas E. Marshall, PhD.).
