what feature you'd desire in your dream home?

Cool article!

for me:

1) beyond imagination kitchen
2) His and Hers bathrooms.... hers would include: sunken whirlpool tub in corner with automatic shading windows, seperate "room" for toilet, dressing area and lighted vanity, marble shower with skylight.
3) Lush gardens (enough that you could get lost in them)
4) Parlor
5) hardwood floors throughout

:)

Pool Table
Gi-normous walk-in closet and shoe racks (for the wife)
Decent home theater system...maybe with projector.
3-car garage
"Adult" play room ;)

I don't give a crap about the garden, kitchen, swimming pool, whirlpools, etc...

Wow, for once, I match the profile of my generation. The GenX list looks damn near perfect. I'd swap the Garden for Workshop/Hobby Studio on the list though.

Interesting...

My wife undoubtedly would like a huge house, but as I do 90% of the cleaning and all of the yard work, I am totally against that.

One thing we would both like though is a state of the art kitchen (mainly for her, but I do cook once in a while), I would like a big yard, a fire pit, a nice deck w/ my grill and most importantly a study.

My study must be large enough for my computers, a couple floor to ceiling book shelves (oak), a leather couch (for reading), a chess table, and a desk and my posters of places I have traveled to - Grand Canyon, Isle Royal etc. However the lighting is one one of the most important features it must be enough to do my work, yet not overly bright - flourescent lights are unacceptible. The final touch is that it is my room, the wife and kids can have the rest of the house, but that is mine.

The kicker would be a large basement with a ping-pong table, a couple of couches, and an entertainment center w/ dvd player, stereo, tv, and my 8-bit nintendo. However I would toss this out if I could have the study.

Addendum: reading though the article and responses, these also struck me as important...
Proximity to work (I prefer to bicycle), a playroom for my kids (could double as my ping-pong room?) and a excellent school district.

Lots of mine have been mentioned -

1) Huge walk in closet (we're talking like 10x15 or more)
2) Luxury master bath suite including oversized garden soaking/whirlpool tub, marbled walk in shower with multiple heads and room for two ;). Tiled floors with radiant heating so that it's warm on the feet in the winter.
3) Very large kitchen complete with oversized built in fridge & freezer, gormet gas range with multiple ovens, and built in cooling cabinets.
4) Full "rec" area including pool table, projector with stadium seating and high end audio system, dart board, card table, and full sized bar complete with kegorator.

#1? Location! Plenty of land with it or it wouldn't be my dream home.
And, I'd be willing to bet that most of you would turn down your "dream home" if it was located in the middle of a slum.

...not if it was surrounded by a 12' concrete wall and dogs that shot bees out of their mouths. ;)

Good to see the house I am building has a lot of these things.
I am putting a LOT of work into this (doing much of it myself) so I am quite proud of it
.
The things we put in:

1) Dedicated home theater pre-wired for 7.1 surround. Room was purposefully made so the walls are not multiples of one another (14' by 17' I believe.) I wish it had a slanted ceiling, but oh well.

2) Walk in closet the size of a bedroom.

3) Huge master bath with walk in shower and multiple shower heads/massagers (maybe even a shower tile), two person corner Jacuzzi, and his/her sinks, with separate toilet.

4) Bamboo floors everywhere except theater area and mud room/bathrooms.3

5) Central Vacuum

6) Whole house audio with 4 sources, 6 zones, and 16 speakers + subwoofer.

7) House wired for TV, internet and phone

8) Large kitchen with double convection ovens, center island with seating for 4, pantry with etched glass door (it is the details that makes it count!), and Corian counter tops.

9) Formal dining and breakfast nook.

10) 3 car garage that will actually fit my truck (one bay is 25' long)

All located on about 3 acres with a view to the hills and LOTS of sun. Total sq footage is about 5400. All for around 400K give or take, not including the land. Talk about sweat equity!

What am I missing?

You smoke cigars too? I can't imagine ever having enough cigars to even fill a desk humidor, let alone a walk in humidor...

Yea, my little humidor has maybe 1 cigar in it. I'll smoke a few a month. But I think it would be awesome to have one near the bar, mainly for when I have guests over.
