I think its HTML. That made it possible to "use a computer" by knowing nothing more than how to click on some underlined text , and what a "back" button was. A lot of people bought PCs when it turned out that's all you really needed to know about a computer.

Yes, the WWW (HTML) was definitely the driving force.

Of course along with that came the easy accessability to porn. Never forget the power of pornography to bring the world together.

We are the world. We are the perverts...

Actually, I think Dr. Berner Lee helped the internet take off a bit in early 90s (maybe even 1990). But Marc Andreesen is one of the most responsible "people" to help the internet take off. He developed the first browser (mosaic)[Netscape guy] which makes it much easier for us all to browse the net.

Of course the HTML above is also a big answer - the browser basically interprets HTML code and allows us all to view the sites

I think you all may be talking about the WWW, not necessarily the Internet???

Now, it would make sense to say that the WWW is responsible for the widescale adoption of the Internet after 1993

That's absolutely a strong point. Both parties actually benefit, the users get entertainment at no costs, whereas the provider gets the exposure from the ads and the revenue that is generated on the side.

And besides - when something is free, it's definitely a great promotion for any cause ;)
