What fan on AK31 w/1.4 Athlon

I am currently running a 1.4 Athlon on a ECS K7VZA board with a unknown fan that came with the combo.(was suppose to be a upgraded HD fan) The processor is currently running aroung 115-117 degrees. Is this OK? Due to problems with the K7VZA I have purchased a new AK31A rev.3 board and was wondering if I needed to get a better fan and if so, what is recommended? Not worried about price, I just want the best for the money.

Approximately 50 C (or 122 F) is the highest I'll ever allow my CPU to reach (Athlon XP 1800+). If you're planning on overclocking, you'll probably want a larger heatsink/fan - with an Alpha PAL8045 and YSTech 48 CFM fan, I hardly ever exceed 33 C (95 F) at full load. Of course, the original Athlons put off more heat, so your mileage may vary. However, the Alpha website doesn't specify the Shuttle AK31 as a compatible mobo.

Get the thermalright sk6 ($33 newegg) or the swiftech 462 ($49 at hardcore cooling for bare heatsink, and add a sunon quiet fan for about $8 more). Can't go wrong with either one.

Do to this post and some other recommendations I have decided to order the Alpha PAL8045 and YSTech 48 CFM fan. Thanks for all the input and help. :)

I got the Swiftech MC462 for $52 at www.wicked-edge.com it works great (I am using 1.33ghz Tbird, temperature was around 53 celcius with Alpha 6035+silicon heatsink grease, once I got swiftech mc462+arctic silver ii, the reported temperature dropped to 41 celcius full load).

Beware, the Shuttle AK31/AK31a boards do not have much room around the CPU for large fans. You may have to make a simple modification to it to get larger fans to fit. Examples of fans that do not fit (by default) are larger Taisol HSFs, ThermalTake Volcano 5/6/6+. To get these and other large HSFs to fit, you must make a modification to the Northbridge cooler. The cooler is a small heatsink with a fan on it. The heatsink has two tabs in opposite corners, like almost all motherboards, with plastic pins that apparently hold the unit to the motherboard. Unfortunately the pin will come in contact with the bottom of larger heatsinks, causing them to not be properly seated on the CPU. The fix is to remove the offending pin. No worry, on ALL of the Shuttle AK31/AK31a boards I've seen (probably over 30 of them) the heatsink had something else gluing them to the Northbridge and didn't rely on the plastic pins to hold it on. You can also make this a reversible procedure by pinching the pin from the underside of the motherboard so that you remove it intact.

PAL 8045 with YS Tech 48 fit with no problems on the AK31 board and the CPU is running at even 100 degrees where this same CPU on the ECS board was running 117. Only problem as you can see in my other post is the CPU not showing the proper speed at boot, only 1054 instead of 1.4.

No problems with my Taisol on the AK31A. It doesn't contact the Northbridge fan at all, although it does come very close.

I am running AK31 v3.1 with 1.4g Athlon @ 1551, with a Swiftek MCX-370, 60mm 7200rpm fan. Temp of cpu usually round 37-41 deg, full load.
