What external sound card should I get?

I'm looking to get some 4.1 or 5.1 speakers for my laptop and want to get an external sound card to get true surround sound. What external sound cards do you guys think I should look at? Thanks in advance.

There really isn't any. Aside from the Extigy which doesn't work too well...there isn't any other decent product on the market. Unfortunetly, the Extigy is your only choice, and its not such a good one...

Just wondering, but would you honestly have asked the same question if I had a desktop or didn't mention my laptop at all? Anyway, I doubt that a lot of stuff we put or think about putting on our systems is something we NEED. I'm just interested in my options and I don't see anything wrong with wanting a set of surround speakers just because I have a laptop...

I'm by no means experienced in this area, but just thought I'd put in my little bit of random useless information. Extigy's really the only external sound card that's on the general consumer market right now. Reviews don't seem very positive.

Which one is that then?

There isn't one. He probably thinks that the GTXP is an external soundcard which it's not. It just has a breakout box. It's also not that great since it doesn't have ADCs in the breakout box and sends its analogue signal all the way back to the board before being digitized. It's a bad design. It also can't handle as many streams as the competition and falls flat on its face in modern games such as UT2K3 and NOLF2.

Thanks for the replies. Seeing as I don't have much choice, I'll probably hold off on getting an external sound card for now and hope someone comes out with a better one. I'll see what happens... but if you guys have more options, I'll be glad to hear them.

Falls flat on its face in what way? Performance? EAX?

i know there are a few others... onkeyo (sp) makes one... the maudio, there area few others but i can't remember off the top of my head.

personally, i have the extigy on my laptop and it's amazing. i run my tv, xbox (roommates), ps2 and vcr though it and out to a set of klipsch 5.1's, the extigy has the front/center/rear out puts which makes it nice for the 5.1 speaker set up's.
