My phone jack is in a remote corner. I have found ethernet cables in stores, but I cannot find which cable I need to connect the phone jack to the modem. SBC sent me a "DSL cable" . It fits into the phone jack, but its round not flat like the standard phone cable.
First time doing DSL so a bit confused. What cable do I need for the phonejack-modem part ? And where do get it ?

Also, I could not find a phone cable at newegg, circuitcity etc.

From the phonejack to the DSL modem is any plain old RJ11 to RJ11 cable... You know that plug that goes into the phonejack? Its just a cable the same plug on both ends. Kinda like the one you'd use for a dial-up modem as well... or to a phone. Wow... Technology > you

The cable should have came with the DSL modem.

So then the cable that SBC gave you has a standard RJ-11 (normal phone jack) on one side and a weird round jack on the other end?

If possible, can you take a picture?

Is this the modem that SBC provided you with? I would assume that those stupid jerks would use somethign proprietary. I would bet that only way you can get an extension is to buy it direct from SBC unless it's some type of weird standard.

You could just use whatever cable you have to connect the modem to the phone jack, and then just use a longer ethernet cable for hooking the modem to the PC. If it's a USB modem you can probably find a longer USB cable.

Yes, the equpment has been provided by SBC.
The "data cable" has jacks which fit into a phone jack (both sides), so no incompatibility there, from ribbon's post I guess its R11 to R11.
However the normal phone wires I've seen are flat (the wire itself, not the ends). The data cable I've got is round - so the ends are R11 but the wire itself is round like an ethernet cable.
Here is a pic:

I was just wondering if the SBC "data cable" is some high quality thing for DSL, better than a standard phone cable; and if so where would I get a longer one.

---sorry mostly ignorant wrt technology.
But I run linux :)

SBC's "data cable" is just a moderately classy rj11 cable, you can sub in another without any trouble. If your wiring is really, really marginal, it might degrade performance; but most people's wiring is good enough that the ISP cap will kick in before the lousy wiring does. It would be safe to go with Ribbon13's advice, though.

Personally. I'll try a 25 footer or even a 50 footer RJ-11 (regular phone connection wire) which will cost you less than $10.00 (50'). I doubt there will be degradation, since I've got my DSL connected same way and even shared to other three systems. But if you're having doubts of course you can always use a longer RJ45 ethernet cable.
