I have never, and I repeat never delivered the payroll late. I know that is the quickest way to lose any loyalty I may have from my employees. There were times in my early days in business that it was very tough to do, and there were times when I did not get paid, but my employees have always received every penny they were due, on time.

Our Company policy is that checks are not passed out until 12pm Friday because that is the deadline for transfering money within company accounts.

It's an accounting...The company needs to make sure that the money is in the account. Also if its a big company with many employees the extra interest on that cash sitting for the weekend (since the deposited cheques don't clear until next week) can be sizable. If the cheques were handed out early then they might get cashed on Friday, robbing the company of 2 days interest.

So then how do you explain it for those that have direct deposit - which is the majority of people? I get a copy of my paycheck but the money is in my account before I get that copy of my paycheck. It doesn't matter if my employer hands the checks out at 8:00 am or 5:00 pm on payday because I and my fellow employees already have the money in our accounts.

Sounds to me like the OP's company is just wanting to be arseholes about it to those that don't have direct deposit.

ETA - If the OP's company has that tight of a balance regarding payroll, I sure as hell wouldn't want to work there since they're afraid that those that don't have direct deposit cashing their checks at the company's bank on payday might cause a deficit. Sounds like a lousy place cutting strings and doing business unprofessionally.

Firstly, you can't "rob" the business of interest on money that, although it is sitting in their account, is not theirs. Second, it doesn't matter if the check was cashed on Friday or not. It won't clear on the company account until the next week, at the very least.

Direct Deposit. Once it was delay a couple of days. Said it was a bank problem. Never any real problems.

Worked for my Dad at his warehouse when I was like 12. Would only get paid after all other expenses were paid...including all the bills and expenses at home...including my rent and meals...didn't get paid much that summer.

Our checks are automatically printed on Monday at noon (Salaried).
All checks require 2 signatures, no one can sign their own check.
We have told the younger guys that the checks may be picked up on Wednesday, but that payday is officially on Friday.
Sometime one of us 4 that are authorized to sign Paychecks is not available and we don't get them signed on Tuesday (Rare).

A couple of months ago, we had one Project Manager on vacation, and the owner was out of town on business. One of our younger managers wives came in on Wednesday morning and got quite ill with our bookkeeper when she was told they weren't ready!
Luckily, I am doing a project just a few blocks from the office, so I was able to go over and sign them.
Had a little talk with him that afternoon, but she still comes in every Wed. expecting his check!
