Coming out of San Francisco every Friday....anywhere from 3:00pm to 5:30pm adds at least 20 mins to as much as another full hour to an already long commute. And I'm sure it's like this in other metropolotin areas. But my question is why. What exactly is the cause of this? And why do people try to go home early on Friday's if they know damn well they might as well wait 'till later to avoid almost doubling their commute time?

I'd guess more people driving more erratic than they already do. People leaving town for vacation. Psychological reasons?

People tend to get to work at different times in the morning, but they ALL leave at the same time in the afternoon. But, places like LA (even before the transit strike) and here in DC, there's just 24/7/365 traffic.

I noticed that here it is thurdays that are the worst and fridays the best. Then again most of the bars here do sink or swim on thursday so there is probably a lot of "sick" people on friday.

Around here, during the summer, everyone heads down to Cape Cod every goddamn Friday. Nightmarish traffic!

People leaving for the weekend I would suppose. I know that's what it is in my area.
