I'd be cool with RGB LEDs but the tv makers aren't going to let those take off for no really good reason.

I mean, if people are going to be happy with the crap displays we have today, then something is wrong.

There is a very good reason, cost. If LED of all colors worked at the same voltage and used the same current then it wouldn't be an issue , but that isn't how LED work. Powering a single RGB LED requires 3 different voltages, and 3 different current limiting devices, then you have the color differences to work out and that means controlling each LED so that the output color is what is needed. All of that adds cost and complexity to the design. To control just 1 RGB LED you are going to use 6 transistor type devices.
 
Actually, the CCFL's "disappearing" isn't really happening.
What is happening is that somethingthat used to be cheap due to economies of scale, is now becoming rarer, because an even cheaper technology has been found to replace it. As a result the old technology is now becoming more expensive, because the supply/demand situation has changed.
Also, fewer models are being built generally, as the technology is only interesting for people who aren't looking for the cheapest screens possible. If you are ready to lay down 700-1000 dollars on a 24" screen, you'll get wonderful CCFL lighting. Just not at 300 dollar.

That's just it, most people are happy with a "crap" display. I have a hard time seeing any difference between the various types of display when they are all side by side in the showroom. In my home, without a reference for comparison, the subtle difference is even more difficult to see. Maybe my eyes aren't as good as yours or maybe I just haven't researched enough to know what to look for so the faults don't bother me, but to me they're all acceptable. Even the worst HD panels look better than my SD CRT did, I'm okay with incremental improvements, I don't expect the end all and be all of technology to be delivered today. To be honest I was happy with SD for the most part, the clarity of closed captions is about the only thing that would make me say I could never go back to SD.
