What exactly is the difference between an AGP video card and a PCI?

I'm wondering what the differences are? Is the AGP faster or a better way to hook up a card on your system?

If I were to use a two card set up; one for games and one for 2d, which card would be better to buy as a PCI card?

I was thinking about picking up a Matrox card for 2d (this would include dvd movies wouldn't it?) and whatever the hot gaming card was.

TIA,

Sal

AGP is on its own bus. The PCI has a limit of 133 MB a second, AGP4x can do like 1 gig a second, and it will not interfere with your PCI bus (sound card, hard drives, etc.)

Go for PCI 2D, and AGP3D. Not many good gaming PCI cards, and they are not as good as their AGP counterparts.

Will I be limited on a card like a Maxtor G450 PCI card vs. a AGP card for 2d? The reason why I'm asking is because the 2d performance takes a precidence in my system. I'd also like a gaming card though and I totally understand why an AGP card is better now.

Thanks!

The memory throughput requirements of a 2D card will be fine on a PCI slot. I can't think of any 2D situation which would need an AGP card. If you are happy with your Matrox card's quality, by all means keep using it for 2D.

3D has much higher memory throughput needs, which is why AGP was created.
