What exactly is the cpu shim for??

I thought it's for cooling purposes.. (since more contact area).. .but it doesn't really have contact with the core... so what is its use exactly??

it's used to prop up the heatsink, or to prevent the core from being crushed.

fcpga packages are extremely fragile. read: CRACKED CPU.

If its a conductive shim and it shifts when you install the hsf it will fry your chip!
It does not disperse more heat, like you said the core isnt even touching the shim!
I dont bother with them!

A 9 dollar investment can save you about 150 makes sure you dont crack it but wont do anymore on heat transfer I have one works great also make sure to get a non-conductive one like a cool shim
