What exactly is shimmering?

Everyone talks about it but I can see nothing strange in the games I play. Could someone explain it and give some shoots?

Thanks.

You can't really take screenshots of it, but in source based games it is very apparent when AF is on w/ driver enabled optimizations. I fixed my shimmering by turning off the optimizations. It looks like a small rippling effect on walls and surfaces etc.. when you move your point of view. It literally shimmers every pixel line.

Also, according to the drivers.. I believe its the option that will force point mip-map filtering on all but the first texture stage. If that's true it may be similar to the shimmering of older games like quake with point mip-map filtering.

doesnt matter anyway coz i cant see any of what hes describing.....to me looks like i downloaded the same file multiple times

but i do know what the shimmering is, specially in HL2 and CS:S when the terrain textures are supposed to be gravel like. they litterally shimmer almost like theres loads of glass on the floor and your getting mulitple reflections really quickly, or like glistening effect

I don't see it either. It must not be a problem? I just dl the far cry demo and I see the trees shimmering. I'm not sure if its hardware related though?

And I thought I complained when my 9800 Pro had "shimmer" to it in relation to AF.

Either I got used to it and learning to ignore it, or my 6800GT doesn't give me a problem with it.

Looks like we have a bunch of Nvidia Fanboys who can't "see" shimmering!

Btw, I can't see it either.

You mean you don't want to see it. I guess you downloaded the JointOps videos that were posted and I specifically higlighted the areas where shimmering occurs. It's clearly visible and if you can't see it, you either have very bad eyesight or a horrible quality monitor.

I remember in CS:S Aztec , the grass shimmered for about 4-5 months until nV finally fixed that

I dont see anything abnormal. I still don't get what this 'shimmering' thing is. Are there any more obvious video clips of this effect?

Wait, I see it now. Its not very pronounced. I can't see why everyone is so up in arms about this. Oh well.

Neither can I. Used to see a thread about the damn thing every day when it's really just 30 pixels on the floor in the background you can hardly notice. I don't want to see or hear that word any more. Set your LOD bias higher if you don't like it. But then they'll complain about it being too blurry...Mommy, the pixels here are (245,245,245) not (255,255,255), oh noes!!!#@ :(

Shimmering(*shudder*) isn't the moire. It's the pixels that aren't properly mip-mapped in the backgroundish area.

And for some of those who can, they are simply TRYING to find problems.

Im not saying it doesn't exist, but M0RPH you are making it out to be the absolute worst thing aside from an invasion . Get a grip!

yea, it's not very noticable. i don't see why ppl would make a big fuss...but i guess that's the only way problems will be resolved.

I didn't notice it till people pointed it out. I have a 6800 and the grass is wavy sometimes in BF2. Don't know if that's considering shimmering.

Now that you guys pointed it out, it bothers me somewhat, but not enough to detract from gameplay.

How come this complaining of shimmering seems a little one-sided? I thought ATI had it too?
