What exactly is "redshirting?"

If a player redshirts a year, the redshirt year is not considered part of their eligibility. Thus they have an extra year to play.

The act of being an ensign on Kirk's ship and, inevitably, dying at the hands of some nameless alien race.

Not true. There are guidelines as to how much a player can play per year and still be considered a redshirt. If a player is injured and exceeded that time they can not redshirt.

Listen to Minendo, I really don't know what I'm talking about besides how I've heard it used:beer:

Exactly! There's always some new 'red shirt' that never lives to see the end of the episode 😀

Actually, "redshirting" is claiming that a higher priced Asian built car performs better than any other car on the planet, bar none.😛

My question is why do people even sign up for Starfleet then? If you're likely to be killed as a Redshirt, wouldn't it be safer to take a nice office job or something? Or maybe they're just hoping they'll be one of the "lucky few" that survive, and make it on to captain?:Q

No one signs up for starfleet. They are actors ... on a show, its not real. They don't hope to be one of the lucky few who survive. they all survive.

Redshirt: The term "redshirt" is not an official NCAA term. It is simply a reference to a year in which a student-athlete does not use a season of eligibility. This is usually a conscious decision made by the coaching staff so that an individual can have time to concentrate on academics, gain strength or gain knowledge of a sport.

Yep. My cousin redshirted for his school's soccer team when he broke his leg freshman season. He has another year of eligibility which he said he'll do just because he's on full scholarship and he might as well take advantage of it

It's when you're the only ensign in the away team and you have this terrible feeling that you're not going to be beaming back aboard with the away party when the mission is over :Q 🙁
