What exactly is IQ?

JEDI

Lifer
i've heard the higher the iq= the smarter you are

but how does that translate in the real world?

edit: iq= ability to process information?

edit2: IQ measures two kinds of abilities ... memory and analytical skills.

IQ tests don't measure other kinds of skills that are important in the real world, like creative and practical skills.

it doesn't, it's pretty much all hogwash for identifying smart people.

it can be useful in measuring the low end though, to see how disabled someone's mental faculties are.

Intelligence Quotient I believe.

All it is really is an indicator of how much information you can absorb in a given period of time.

intelligence quotient.

a method to compare people to each other, based on their 'intelligence'.

let me elaborate:
i don't think you can compare people's IQ (i.e. determine which person is 'smarter') without having them all take the same test at the same time. so unless you do that, it's a pretty much meaningless number.

that said, back 15 years ago one of the requirements when i applied to my high school is to pass an IQ test >120 which has to be taken in a certain IQ test provider.

(yeah, it's kind of private exclusive high school like that 🙂 )

If I was taught correctly in school, IQ started as a test in the army. It is a test in which you have a short time to answer simple questions (questions that most people should know the answer or should be able to figure out). The average scores on the test go up consistantly with age for a while - then it levels off.

It is a test of how quickly you can answer questions more than anything else.

I've taken two free tests online. 1st one = 148. Second test = 151

It is worth noting that Alfred Binet, who created the IQ test in 1904, was aiming to identify students who could benefit from extra help in school: his assumption was that lower IQ indicated the need for more teaching, not an inability to learn.

I took one online and got 167. Just remember that the ones online are generally trying to sell you a certificate or something so are most likely artificially inflated.

Yes, and he also wanted to define rigid vocations for those with defined IQ levels. An IQ of 125 through 135 might be required for a doctor, whereas maybe 85 for an infantry soldier.

Those online tests are bs for the most part. I see IQ as sort of like an engine; the bigger the number, the more you're capable of - however you need to have sufficient airflow, the right fuel, etc to make that power. For example, I have a high IQ, but was brought up by idiots in an extremely dysfunctional household, and so haven't made much of it.

numbers don't tell you that much (even for real tests) it's your percentile rank that's significant -- see www.Mensa.org

no cookie for you! 😉
