Stefan, do you mean "what are 'flames'"? Here is the dictionary's definition, I think its what you're lokoing for:

"The zone of burning gases and fine suspended matter associated with rapid combustion; a hot, glowing mass of burning gas or vapor."

Unfortunately it's totally misleading. Gravity and air pressure are not interchangeable.
