What exactly is DVI?

Is it something I don't care about if I'm not using a LCD?

Its for connecting to LCDs, should have perfect image quality as there's no D-A convertors (RAMDAC) needed, which is what can cause the difference in "Image quality" noticable between different cards

Most importantly, the signal travels the cable in lossless digital form. High end CRT monitors also use digital DVI connections now, for that reason - even if they obviously have to convert it to analog then to drive the CRT.

Even flat panels have to make the signal analog in the end btw. The trick is the much shorter analog signal path.
