What exactly happens when you install SP1 with the Devils Own key?

I know that they make key changers so thiefs can still install sp1 with xp corp. I am wondering if anyone has tested sp1 with the devils own key? Does Microsoft give you a message saying "your os is invalid, now format your hard drive" or something. I am curious as to what exactly happens and what is done to your hard drive?
Has anyone tested this?

According to the TweakTown article, it gives you an error that you don't have a valid Product Key (M$ lists the 2 ID numbers that show you've got the DO XP - so acting surprised isn't an option) and bombs the install. I dunno if it also breaks the Windows Update, but that's been talked about before.

Check over in Operating Systems for more on this. The key changer worked for me and SP1 installed AND I've run Windows Update after installing SP1, so it looks all good. Whatever. I ordered one of the M$ Channel Partner kits and have XP Pro on hand JIC.

I dont think it causes the system to Tank, I think you just cant update which means in time the system will Tank. Easiest Fix, Buy a legit copy of XP.

Yes, from what I understand, updates made after SP1 will require SP1 to be installed before allowing an update. If you can't get SP1 installed because you have an illegal version....well.....

I`ve updated three different machines , no problems, although when I go to Windoz Update and scan for updates, it never moves from "0%" on all three machines .

If you got it - try it on a mule drive (experimental clone.) But if you write about it, that amounts to evidence that could be used by Fishingeek's web site. :)

Successful crooks don't discuss their exploits in public.

First thing you need to do is search for a program called XPKey.exe , after you find your new key do this below.

How to change product key in XP with no re-install.:

1. Run regedit and go to: HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current Version\WPAEvents, in the right pane double click on
"oobetimer" and change at least one digit of this value. This will deactivate windows. Exit regedit.

2. Choose run from start menu and type in this command: %systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a to get the activation screen.
Go to the second option which is activate by phone. Click Next.

3. In the new screen choose the option to change product key, and type in the new product key (Corporate one only). You cannot use the FCKGW key.
Do not click Update.

4. Close that window, reboot your system and enter the command in step 2 again for the second time to verify your activation , you should see "Windows
Is Already Activated".

If you don't have a valid key, SP1 install merely quits and doesn't damage your system. The installer will simply quit.
