VNC'd into gf's laptop to diagnose her father's car and got that error code.

Any idea what's wrong? How do we fix it? How much?

Thanks.

if the comp will let it run ignore it you don't need it. knock sensor is a micophone that listens for knocking caused by cheap gas and will retard the timing a few degrees

what he said, but you shouldn't ignore it. knocking is not good for the engine at all. it's probably just a cheap $10 sensor that you can replace yourself anyway.

Not necessarily cheap - on my last car, the knock sensor was not only expensive, but you had to tear off half the engine to get to it.

It probably means the sensor is shorted or there is an open circuit. First things first, check the connections going to it and make sure it is actually plugged in.

Sorry, knock sensors are not $10 parts. But yeah, replacing it is probably the solution. They are pretty sensitive items tho. Overtightening them can make them malfunction.

Hey where in the world do you buy your sensors for only $10? The only sensor that would cost $10 is a coolant temp sensor. Coolant temp sensor only does 1 thing, tells you how cold/hot your engine is which shows on your cluster. But, a knock sensor costs about $75 or more depending on the type of car it's for. I replaced the knock sensor in my Nissan. Not sure if my BMW has one or not, doesn't matter cause it's running like a charm...

ask mods to move it to the garage, you might get more/better responses.
