What exactly do those DJs in rock/rap bands do?

I see a lot of today's rock/rap groups have a DJ. Linkin Park, Incubus, Limp Bizkit, and Sugar Ray come to mind. I can barely hear their tracks they're laying with all the sound coming from the guitars and drums. Occasionally, I hear a few record scratches. When I seem them perform on TV, I can see them spinning some records, but I can't tell if it's contributing to the music. Are these guys really playing music or just window dressing?

It depends on the group. Urban Dance Squad has a DJ and you can tell when he is working.

They're just there to look cool and do the "Universal DJ Pose (UDJP)." You know, hold one hand up to your headphone, and scratch with the other.

Well, if you hear anything that doesn't sound like a singer, guitar, drum or bass then that's them.

Man, I should work for Nasa!

So if I hear a keyboard it is the DJ? No wonder the Mars probes keep crashing.

Sorry, yakko, that was my fault for thinking that you could think for yourself.

Let me clarify. If you hear any noise that wouldn't normally come from a regular instrument and the band doesn't have a keyboard or synth in it, then it's probably the DJ.

Just like when you NASA guys say "I was adding in miles and he was doing kilometers."

:)...there is no one hand scratching...one hand is on the record, the other on the crossfade when their holding their headphones to the ear they are usualy matching beats :)
