I remember the motherboard that I had my Cyrix 5x86 100mhz on way back when (don't know the board model. this was the last system I bought prebuilt) had a GUI Bios with mouse support and dragable windows and all. Where did this go? I though it was awesome but here we are 5 years later and . . . text-based BIOSes.

BIOS is strictly functional...do you really need a GUI? You aren't even multitasking so what does the GUI bios give you? The major reason it is not included is the limited size of memory on the Flash BIOS chips. Flash memory is expensive and every cost savings counts on the competitive motherboard market. GUI would easily double or triple the memory requirements.

Of course I don't need a GUI (I sometimes use Lynx to browse the web ;)), but it just looks nicer to have it there. I like to spruce things up. I like nice looking cases, interfaces, etc. It boggles my mind when people talk about turning off their wallpaper to reduce memory usage. What's the point in using the computer if you have no wallpaper? :)
