what ever happened to GOOD cpu coolers for < $60

it drives me crazy to see how many people have to LAP their CPU coolers nowadays - the average 'joe' doesn't even know what the heck we're talking about - but it seems to me that the manufacturers are being lazy and/or accepting sub-par levels of variation on their own products...

some of these coolers are 10% (if not MORE) efficient when lapped... why the heck don't they take the extra minute at the factory and EARN their $60

I agree - thats why I'm still using my thermalright XP-120. I wanted a TRUE for a while, but lapping really does not appeal to me at all. 5 years ago nobody would have even thought of lapping a heatsink!

 
I haven't read about problems with coolers other than the TRUE which would NEED lapping. Sure it makes heatsinks better but is it necessary? Maybe I've just missed it? At least they don't mention such things in reviews.
 
My Scythe Ninja puts me at 50C full load and it's running passively on my X2 4200+. Not sure I know what you're talking about. 😛
 
Good CPU coolers for less than $60? Look into the OCZ Vendetta / Vendetta 2, Xigmatek HDT-983 / HDT-1283, Arctic Cooling Freezer Pro 7...
 
someone teach thermalright how to make a flat sink please.

that would make all of us a lot happier.

I fail to see a problem. Just apply thermal paste properly and make sure heatsink is attached properly and with decent pressure.

As for Thermalright, I've heard that they intentionally make their heatsinks a bit convex to make up for the typical CPU being a bit concave. However, anyone who laps their CPU is basically forcing themselves to lap their TRUE as well, since you can't have one without the other.

Of course I could be imagining all this.

i heard its cuz they didnt account for the thicker tubes, so the base got warped.

sorry i believe my reason more then theres. There BOW is completely wrong. And you dont have anywhere near the right mounting pressure to pull off a good bow.

You're not crazy, that's how they're supposed to be, according to this statement from silentpcreview during their review of the TR HR-01 Plus:

I wasted two Ultra-120 until I got the last one (yes, a third) lapped by a very generous AT member. The pic aigomorla posted is very accurate describing my first two Ultra-120. It wasn't terrible, but it didn't make me a believer. After using the lapped one, I'm now a TRUE believer. lol.

Anyway, it is a pity that Thermalright can't seem to get such a basic thing right. It seems like the best heatsinks they make are chipset heatsinks.

If this was the case, then why do they perform better flat then convex.

No im sorry, the company is feeding bs to hide there OOPS.

had the sink performed better with a bow, then when lapped the sink would perform WORSE.

Example is a bowed water block. Bowed, there awesome pulling about 3-4C over unbowed.

But lap a bowed block, and you destroy the block.

This is NOT the case with a TRUE or IFX-14.
So no, the company is telling you BS! and stop believing it.
Cuz we accept there BS excuse, they dont change it!
