The treatment of Dalits is appalling.

"Every hour - two dalits are assaulted, every day three - dalit women are raped and two dalits are murdered ....two dalit houses are burnt." (Human Rights Education Movement in India)

Of course, every culture has its own set of issues. How many unborn children have we killed in the US?

STFU and take your religious BS with you

Ashkenazi Jews.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashkenazi_Jews#Achievements said:
Ashkenazi Jews have a noted history of achievement in western societies. They have won a large number of the Nobel awards. In those societies where they have been free to enter any profession, they have a record of high occupational achievement, entering professions and fields of commerce where higher education is required. For example, during the 20th century in the United States, Ashkenazi Jews represented approximately 3% of the population, but won 27% of the US Nobel Prizes in science, and 25% of the ACM Turing Awards (the Nobel-equivalent in computer science).

Not an issue as far as I'm concerned...how many born children have we left behind? How many live and die in poverty? Why the fuck are the unborn of such concern to the religious hypocrites? How many women and children have we killed in the middle east over the past 10 years? I guess they were all killed in God's name so it's okay.

How many unborn children that would have otherwise grown up in a life of poverty and been a drain on society have we killed?

Not enough IMO

What an incredible counterargument!

Killing little girls is the mark of a civilized culture, is it?

My point is that all cultures and all civilizations do or have done horrible things. Just because modern India hasn't wiped out another country doesn't mean that they're more "CIVILIZED" as you put it.

Ghengis Khan nearly conquered the world. I think he was the only one who came closest anyway.

Nearly conquered the world? Not hardly! He conquered a sheet load of sparsely populated land mass, it's true. Beeg Deal! ;)

Remember, the Mongols had no naval capability that I know of.

Alexander the Great subjugated a ton of diverse and majestic cultures, and did it all before dying at the age of 32. Yet neither he nor GK truly came close to conquering the entire world.

Excepting single personages, and given it's time frame, I'd say that The Roman Empire at it's height was probably most dominant. Second might be The British Empire.

The sun never set on the British Empire. No other "empire" could come close to making this claim. You're also going to get the Persians under Xerxes, Russia under the Czar, and Chinese fanboys weighing in.

How do you measure the value of the Sistine Chapel against the Pythagorean Theorem? How can you measure the sum value of any culture's achievements?

Ahh, this wise post reminds me of what I came in here originally to say: The OP's very question is inherently flawed.

in terms of art, culture, architecture, education, science, etc.

I would have to say Greeks, Italians, and Jews, by a long shot.
I would say you can't single out which group brought the most, because even those who have brought the least may have made a huge impact.

What nonsense! You talk as if "killing girls" was a daily pastime in India. And, this is a social issue that is completely internal to the culture. Whereas when European rapists, I mean colonists, invaded North America, they were killing little girls, older girls, women, men, and boys of every stripe in the millions. I suppose that is comparable to aborting female fetuses.

There is such a thing as more civilized and less civilized.

Conversely, one can say western women dress and behave like prostitutes so they are nations of whores. Most definitely uncivilized, at least according to the Arabs. However, I suppose you lose sleep over what Arabs think about American women? LOLOL.. Likewise, Indians don't give a rat's ass about what utterly insignificant people think about her people or culture. To each his own.

Furthermore, this thread was about contributions made to humanity. There is no nation on this planet that can claim the sheer number and magnitude of contributions made by India. This does not make India a perfect country. Every country has issues. However, that discussion is beyond the scope of this thread.

My point is that all cultures and all civilizations do or have done horrible things. Just because modern India hasn't wiped out another country doesn't mean that they're more "CIVILIZED" as you put it.

And your point is utterly and completely wrong! India has NEVER done "horrible things" to other cultures or to its people. What its people do in their individual lives is unrelated to what the society does as a whole; you know, what we call "individual freedom". :D

India was, is, and always will be the refuge of the world. Indians have accepted people from all over the world who escaped persecution in their native lands. Starting from the Jews who fled after the destruction of their temple in Jerusalem, to the Syrian Christians (from Syria), to the Zoroastrians in Persia, to the Bahai's of Iran in the modern day, and to the Tibetans who fled persecution from the communists (Chinese).

It's hilarious how liberal Americans rejoice at the election of a half-African male as the President. If you only looked a little deeper; the man was at the top of his class at Harvard and was competing against a dunce who graduated from nearly the bottom of his class in the Navy. Even still, the dunce got 48+ million votes! And people think they are not racist? hahahahahha...

India's first Prime Minister was a self-avowed and vocal atheist (Pandit Nehru). A dalit (untouchable -- Rajendra Prasad) was India's first President!! A woman (Indira Gandhi) was elected PM in 1971 and there was a muslim President (Abdul Kalam) and now India has a Sikh PM (Manmohan Singh) and a female President (Pratibha Patil) and a muslim VP (Mohammad Ansari). All of this through democratic elections so large the world can only watch in awe; more than 430 million people voted in the 2009 elections!!

In conclusion, not only has India not "wiped out" any other country, it has given refuge to the persecuted for thousands of years. I guess you're the type of person who'd compare a Bugatti Veyron to a Hyundai Accent just because they're both "cars". LOLOLOL...
