What equipment do you need to climb a 120' antenna tower?

Just curious if anyone has experience with this. Ive freeclimbed them in the past for fun (young/dumb), but need to do it for a side-job and was looking for advice from climbers on what would be best. Id imagine some kind of self-contained climbing gear (ie, me->rope->tower) rather than a rope from the bottom up.

Thanks for any advice 😛

Tower Harness :hmm:

Yep, wearing the proper harness you can't fall more than a few feet even if you have a heart attack or a brain aneurysm.

Of course that depends on whether or not the ladder is equipped properly for the harness attachment points. If it isn't then you just free climb.

a Harness is a must, but so is a rescue plan in case something does happen while you are climbing. having the right gear for the job is more than just about equipment you need for the climb, its about what you need in case shit goes bad.

depends on the tower ladder. If it is an enclosed ladder you can climb it without clipping on. Of course you'd need to clip on to do any work at the top out of the ladder enclosure.

You have obviously never worked in an industry that required you to climb to great heights.

Harnesses are damned expensive. How many "side jobs" climbing do you expect to get? If this is a one off, I'd take my chances, and climb it. If you have a lot of work to do at the top, you can make a functional harness out of rope and biners so you can clip in.

I have done it for site visits in my job.

you just need a harness. there should be some safety mechanism that hold you. It attaches to the harness. When you fall, it snags and prevents you from falling.

That said, if you never did this, make sure you have someone who has done with you. I have never done it alone.

If he is doing this for job and he did what you recommend, he should not being doing it, period.
