Im moving out there this summer and the only thing I can think of is that rent and mortgage cost more but everything else seems to be the same price. Is there anything else that cost more besides rent and mortgage?

Hmm, I only pay $45 a month for 100/300/100k coverage for a 2005 Scion TC with $500 deductible and I live in the 5th highest crime rate city in the country. I wonder how much more it will cost out there.

It's not about the city overall, it's about the zip code.

If you live in a burbs, it will be cheap.

No, but crime is lower, but still higher than the burbs, atleast in Westwood.

State income and sales tax. Groceries. Restaurants. Lots of nickel and dime stuff that adds up.

everything else is about the same, the only thing i really see that is more is the cost of gas. maybe 10% more but other then that milk costs the same etc.

Its pretty expensive in Virginia, we have state income tax, we get taxed on groceries like milk and eggs, Vegetables are expensive here, i think they are cheaper in Cali. Our restaurant sales tax is 10.5%. We have tolls on roads here, we have to pay a yearly personal property tax on our vehicles. I used to have to pay like $300 a year on a truck that was worth like 8k.

Maybe Arizona (Phoenix in particular) is an anomaly, but my grocery bill was about 20% higher for similar items there than over the Midwest. It was only comparible in price if you were shopping at a grocery store that you had the "savings card" at (Bakers, Albertsons, Safeway, ect) and they were running good promotions. If you didn't have your card on you, you got raked over the coals.

Milk was almost $4.00 a gallon, produce was more expensive, meat was A LOT more expensive, and most of the freezer section items were considerably more expensive as well.

I'd image that CA, with a higher cost of living than AZ would have similar if not worse prices.

No kidding. That's horrible. Again...there's some beauty to living in the cheap midwest.

Taxing groceries sucks. At least we don't get taxed on food and clothing here in MA 🙂

CA has what, 8.25% sales tax on everything?

We don't get taxed on unprocessed food.

It's set by the county, e.g., in LA County, its 8.25%, in Orange County, its 7.75%, in Fresno, its 7.25%, etc.

Nice, Cali has no tax on milk and eggs?

So what city you moving too.

It is mostly just rent/mortgage and gas that cost more here, but everthing else is about the same. But the cost you pay to live here is well worth it.
