Got a new laptop with a wifi card builtin ('b' wish I had 'G' though)
I also have a desktop hooked up to a cable modem.

I take it I need to buy a router/access point? I would like them to be integrated since i am limited
on space.

No an access points do not function as router. The access point will usually offer far more features than a router, but that doesn't include nat.

HUH? Tell me what features that the typical WAP offers over a broadband router. The wireless router is the clear choice here.

taking a page from jackmds' book and posting a link to info

edit: and yes I agree, a router is probably the more sensible decision economically given what he wants it for now, but if like lilcam likes to tinker a bit as i suspect he does, the wap could offer more features to play with in the future.
