What DVD?

i'm thinking of getting a DVD from america off someone on the forsale/trade forum to put in my new system instead of buying a CD-ROM drive, which will be a ASUS A7V with duron 800@1000, 256Mb, and possibly a voodoo 5 or Kyro2, i live in england so shipping will cost a bit extra, i want to be able to play copied/back-up cd's in it (CD-R's) i don't really know much about DVD Drives so how much will i be expected to pay for one, will i need to get a DVD decoder card if i get a cheap one or can i just use software?
will the graphics card do this?
 
with a 1ghz duron proc software decoding will be fine. what do you mean you want to play cd-r backups... if that is the case you don't need a dvd-rom drive... since that is probably divx (mpeg4) movies. ripping dvd is another story... you will need a dvd rom drive. ati cards are the best for dvd playback because it offloads the dvd decoding from the cpu to the gpu... but like i said, with that fast of a proc it doesn't really matter. peace out.
 
wow, wonder why i mentioned CD's?
ah well
anyway so if decoding doesn't matter on the computer i'll be using it on will any DVD player be fine?
also what price will i be looking at?
