The current DVD version is rated PG-13, at least in Canada.

AFAIK, the new scenes in LOTR coming this November will push it to an R rating. So just hold a bit yet.

The extended version and extended version gift box set are going to rated R. They've got some gorier battle scenes that were cut out to get the current PG-13 rating. Buying the PG-13 version is the only way to get the version released in theaters though; the extended versions don't include the original theatrical release.

If this is the version you are talking about, it is also rated PG-13.

Wow, I stand corrected. :) For months rumors said that the extended versions would receive an R. Guess that didn't happen after all. :)

What's the difference between the theatrical release and the extended version? I haven't seen it, just planned on nabbing the dvd when it came out. I mean is the extended one going to be different? I mean sure it'll have more scenes, but nothing that changes the story right?

I think it is going to extend some of the fight scenes, and some of the character development. Nothing major but just more coolness :)

Let me clarify a bit:
The extended version will have gorier scenes, and the news sources say that it was cut in the theatrical cut because the people thought it would push the movie to an "R" rating. Obviously, the extended version has a "PG-13" rating so what does it mean? Simple. The people who originally cut out those scenes simply guessed wrong.

I hope the extended version isn't 30 minutes of Frodo sitting in the grassy hills poking weeds between his toes...that would stink...

Not to bump this ancient thread or anything, but it's been known to be PG-13 for months. :p :) It's a good thing. LOTR doesn't need excessive gore to be a good film.

More revenue when people buy both versions.

New line can have as much of my money as they want. No other studio would greenlight such a project. More power to them.

Not really but the excessive fanboy talk witnessed on this and other forums might.... ;)

For my money I think most people (here at least) will be best served buying the extended Widescreen 4-disc non-collector set.
