What DVD type is most dominant/widely playable?

Just curious - what's the most dominant standard that's most widely playable in DVD drives (both computer and home theater DVD players)? We bought a DVD burner here at work and need to make some copies of a new video training program on DVD. (We're having DVDs being mass produced by our video distributor but for marketing purposes or to pass out to huge clients, we're opting to one-off the DVDs ourselves)

The burner does both + and -, we just wanted to get the best compatibility and such.

Thanks in advance,
Melvin

i use +Rs because i can burn them at 8x i can only burn -Rs at 4x, i like burning them in 7 minutes

i only use them for data so its not really important for me

It's a violently contested subject 🙂

I think for overall DVD player compatibility, go for the -Rs, & for data backups, the +RWs seem to be the best.

I like + personally, but everyone has different opinions.

For DVD videos, you will have wider compatibility using -R, especially for older players.

^^ troo dat.

-R has the best compatibility with legacy hardware. + is a more advanced type atm.

if you want to see an example of a violently contested discussion on the subject look no further than HERE

Keep in mind that thread is ancient...things have changed a bit since then ,as you can easily buy a dual or triple (DVD-RAM) format drive for cheap, & then test medias to determine which one you prefer. 🙂

by legacy hardware i meant legacy settops. it is a proven fact that - has a better compatibility. the thread i linked was just that an example of a heated discussion i didn't say you should heed them words or anything.

p.s. if you want to do compatibility research for different formats there's a database at vcdhelp.com
