Thanks for the advice on the software. I have another question. After I have ripped the dvd, and encoded the divx, isn't there some way to select the quality?? Otherwise the file may be too big to fit on disk. That is another thing. Are there any programs that will let you cut a divx movie into two pieces?

Virtualdub will let you split and join divx files. Follow the link I posted above for more information.

I finished encoding a divx, but when I went to run it, the pictures was all scrambled. Any ideas? Here is what I did. I used DVD Decrypter to rip the movie, then I added all the *.vob files to the Vidomi program and hit the start button. What went wrong?

dont know if you have your heart set on divx but I have been using this program and it is very easy to use specially for noobs.

DVD2SVCD it creates svcd or vdc files.
Its a set it and forget it application and can work in the background while you are using your computer.

Peace

Hey man, you told me about Vidomi a few months ago and here's an update. I tried it right away but it crashed on me each time for whatever reason so I uninstalled it. I went back to it a few weeks ago (with the updated .448) and I had NO problems getting it to work. In fact, using DivX5, I get phenomonal movies (maybe a few brief imperfect digital boxes in the movie occasionally but they are crisp!). Thanks for the tip. Btw, have you gotten Subtitles to work with it??? Thats the only problem I have with it so far. I can get the specific subtitle options to show up in the options (i.e. English, French) but when I select them they NEVER work for me. :(

As for ripping, Smartripper has been great for me.

As for encoding with Divx5, here are my main adjusted settings:

My settings for Vidomi are:
DivX Networks (Two Pass)
No deinterlace
RGB32/HQ Bicubic
Lame, 128k, one pass

DivX5 codec settings:
2-pass,first pass
Encoding bitrate (anything high, Vidomi will override it)
use GMC
use Bidirectional Encoding

Hey jjsole,

Glad you are getting the desired results. I will try your settings on my next conversion!

Have not tried encodding with Subtitles. You may want to try the Vidomi Forum, the moderator is the Vidomi developer so he should be able to help you with your subtitle problem.

powerMarkymark,
I've been reading up in the Vidomi forums and got some more info about subtitles. I've since gotten them to work, but when you do subtitles in Vidomi, they are only viewable when using the vidomi player. Thats a definite limitation, in part because the Vidomi player isn't as good of a decoder as Windvd, which runs divx movies alot smoother, especially with a large screen area. In short, for subtitles one should probably go elsewhere (which I'm reading up on right now.)

Can anyone give me some instructions on how to make a divx? As I posted before, I ripped a dvd and then used Vidomi to try and create a divx. After about 3 hours it finished and the movie was all distorted. When I ripped the dvd, I only ripped the .vob files and I just added the to the vidomi file list to be made into a divx (does the order matter?).

There are a couple links to very good "how to" guides on the Vidomi web site. That is how I learned to use it efectively.

Okay, I finally got it to work, but what video settings work the best? I am planning to fit my ripped dvds on to a cd that has 700mb of capacity.
