I have no idea with one to get. Looking to spend < $100 for an IDE DVD-ROM drive.

Which bundles w/decoder cards are a good deal?

When I bought my slot load, it was 10 bucks more expensive than the tray load.

Still, this thing rocks.

Go to pricewatch and search for "Pioneer 16x 105" for slot and 115 for slot.

I'm not sure what the price might be now but theres a chance they went sub 100.

When I bought mine 3 months ago, it was 110.

I use to have a Pioneer dvd 114 and it was ok. I installed a Toshiba 1402 last month and it blows the Pioneer drive way and its 100$ at Buy.com

What are the DAE speeds on the high speed DVD drives (eg. pioneer 16x, toshiba 12x)? Which has the fastest?

I believe just about all of them with a few exceptions (I know my 6X Pioneer wasn't capable of unlocking, but most other Pioneers should work) are unlockable. And also, I would rather look into the Toshiba rather than a Pioneer b/c you will be getting digital sound output, less drive noise, and comparable speed. Also if you are willing to shell out the clams than you should look into the 16X Aopen which is the king of DVD Drives right now

Pioneer has digital out...and the Aopen just barely beats the Pioneer in tests, no big differences. Both the Aopen and Pioneer 16X are good choices..
