What DVD burner to get?

OK, The wife is allowing me ( 🙂 ) to spend some cash on a DVD burner! I need some feedback as to 1. What type? DVD-RW, DVD-RAM DVD+RW. I have no clear idea. 2. What brand? Any info would be very much appreciated.

P.S. It has to be able to playback on my pioneer DVL-909

I recently got the Pioneer DVR104 (same as A04=retail) which is DV-R(W). I was convinced the DV+RW was not as compatible. I noticed a thread on that argument here yesterday.

Using Windows XP I spent the last 2 days banging my head trying to get some burner software to work with it. Nero and Vob Instant cd/dvd both have "communication error" burn failure (with varios versions and installation attempts - too many). I also played with Roxio VideoPack 5 and Cyberlink Powerdirector without success.

I had pulled the drive out of my XP system and put it in my wifes W2K system and had success burning with Nero, except the disc would not play in a standalone player (probably my fault).

Anyway, what worked without a hitch on my XP system was Rercordnow Max and generic gold media. The disc plays like a champ.

They have a burner survey and some guides here http://mpucoder.kewlhair.com/Derrow/index.html

Good luck.
