DL media, can't say I can help you. I have only burned like 3 DL disks in my life, and only 1 of those worked. I have no idea if that was due to the source or the media though. I was trying to back up my OS X install disks.

I like Memorex for DVD+Rs though (and DVD+R is the way you want to go).

My NEC DVD burner won't even recognize my brand new Sony single layer DVD-Rs. C'mon it's year 2010 and we are still seeing crap like that? This illustrates why nobody deals with optical media anymore.

I've owned 2 NEC burners and I really like em. Check out Liggy & Dee's site to see if there is a suitable firmware you can upgrade to. I've flashed 3 DVD burners (using their firmware upgrades) and they've all turned out just fine.

As for Sony media - can't say that I have any great positive or negative things to say about it. I personally prefer Verbatim media. Next to Taiyo Yuden DVDs, they are hands down the most reliable quality. (I wouldn't mind Taiyo Yudens but I hate their steep prices. Even when they have a sale, they're still more expensive than Verbatims!).

I've been using Verbatim since what... 2000? 2001? In all the years I've been using them, I've had 1 or 2 that crapped out on me. That's 1 or 2 out of 400-500 discs I've burned. I've also used their double layer media - excellent stuff. I refuse to experiment w/ other media.

One of the ladies in OT (geekbabe?) convinced me to try a Samsung DVD burner a few years ago. I liked it so much that I ordered a SATA version for my new build. Quiet, trouble-free for the past 3-4 years. I like the Lightscribe option, so I got that again as well. MUCH better than the old "disk tattoo" that my previous Yamaha CD burner had.

As with many other shrinkwraps, Sony doesn't make their own DVD media. Years ago, they used to be OK, especially if the label stated "Made in Japan" (aka TY). Dunno where they get their discs today, tho'

There's a bit of a misconception here...Verbatim's Life and Value lines are regarded as garbage. In addition, Verbatim also switches suppliers like many other vendors: there have been numerous product listings on newegg over the years where a specific SKU will get nothing but praise for months (made in UAE or whatever) and then suddenly get hammered by reviewers (made in India, etc). So it can be a crapshoot.

I gave up tracking quality many years ago....I just go to rima and get TY, go about my day, la-dee-da-dee-dahhh, not a care in the world...

I've been using Verbatim Lightscribe disks for several years with no problems. No idea who the original manufacturer was...nor do I care as long as they work right.
