Hi, I am really newbie with the network part. So I want to know what DSL modem do you recommend for me. I will use this basically for home network. I have 2 systems at home. Currently I am using 2 Linksys nics using a crossover cable. So what DSL modem is the right one for me and do I need a hub if I want to set up another system (make it three systems)? Thanks

I just went through the same thing this past December/January... first, make sure you know exactly what standards your DSL carrier uses. On their site, they should also list compatible modems.

I'm using Verizon through Winfire, getting a Westell Wirespeed, connecting that to an SMC router for my home network...

I'm kind of interested too. So far, I think they all just have to comply to the PPPoE "standard" or something for the DSL network I'm on (PacBell <- SBC). I have a Westell WireSpeed DSL modem. Not sure exactly which physical DSL type, but ADSL is my initial guess.

You do need a hub if you are using ethernet RJ-45 connectors (looks like phone wires, only more wires and thicker, which you are already using). You can get by with a 10Base-2 network coaxial cable (not sure what the term is) and not use hubs, bit those are limited to 10Mbps half dulpex, and you need some terminators for the end "branches" of the network. I noticed NICs don't seem to offer both connector types very often nowadays, so this might not be an option.

I did once setup a cheap coax network with roomates, and the cheap hub was a bit too much for our budgets!

usually... your service provider will give you the DSL modem, and you really wont have much say in what they give... i think your only options will be something internal or something external... go for the external model.

how if you are talking about sharing that dsl connection... that brings up a whole new issue... the issue of a router.
