State your age and approximate amount of investment per year towards retirement. Feel free to show us your plan breakdown as well.

For those of you that are married, show us how you are utilizing your spouse's income towards retirement as well.

It's too complicated to say. I plan to retire on my own by 50. Anything from the 401k/roth/pension/retirement is gravy after that.

Overall investment into retirement combined is at the max by law per year. Overall investment into wealth generating...not saying.

Retirement accounts are a big mix. I'm no stock guru, but I do have what I call "good diversification". Wealth bearing accounts are different.

You're young mimendo. Throw everything you can into your retirement program. And by can I mean max it out.

Edit: Ages 28(me)/26(her)

Mine is kind of a mess since joint income is too high to recharacterize.

Basically I've got a traditional IRA that was a rollover from an old 401k. It's in a brokerage account that I do light trading in when I see buying opportunities. It's a mix of mid and large cap US stocks that I try and spread out over 8-10 stocks. I put half of my $4000 contribution in there.

For the other half I put it in the "Target 2045" over at Vanguard.

I won't be eligible for my current employers 401k until next June :(. At that point I'll be putting in the max contribution ($12k I think) into an 80/20 mix following the S&P 500(80%) and the other 20% into international.

When the 401k kicks in I'll probably turn my Vanguard into something a little more dynamic and industry based to capitalize on trends. I'll continue to split it 50/50 with the traditional IRA at the brokerage account.

My wife has a similar smattering of accounts that we can't easily consolidate. In January her 401k benefits kick in and she'll start contributing the max amount available in a similar 80/20 split.

I'll probably set her up a Roth at a brokerage and start picking up some decent buys and doing some light trading for her in that account similar to what I do with mine.

My current 401(k) is in a target retirement fund through Schwab. My old 401(k) is at Fidelity and I can still play with it without fees but I have it diversified into foreign, big-cap, and mid-cap funds.

My wife has a rollover account in a target fund that has been doing great this year. Her current 401(k) kind of sucks - not very many choices - and I'm not sure how she has it diversified.

As of this year our income is too high for Roth IRA's so we may set up some non-deductible traditionals and convert to Roth in 2010. Otherwise, we are well-disciplined enough to invest a large sum every month into a "pseudo-retirement" account twice a month so our money is still working for us.

Early 30s. Haven't contributed to Roth or SEP in years.

Wife doesn't work.

I'm not worried about retirement investment. I'll leech off the govt.

Me: 23

12% (including company match) of my annual income of approx. $51k goes into 401k, mostly into an S&P 500 index fund. Have a Roth IRA but have not gotten serious about regular deposits, so it only has about $1k in it. 401k has about $20k.

I put some money into my 401K
Stopped contributing to my Roth-IRA

Invest alll my spare cash otherwise.

Why?
The capital I build in a standard acocunt can be used towards allowable margin in order to trade options. I do mostly naked puts.

As I get older, I'll start putting more into my 401K and Roth-IRA because the additional compounding I get from options is no longer the best bang for hte buck. This should occur at age 35 or so.

At age 40, I expect to be contributing to the matched protion of my 401K and probably be doing more with my Roth-IRA.

I've done the math .. and I care les to explain it ... but i should be well off at 65. I just don't plan on waiting to start living that long.

I also am living in my 3rd remodel. A 4th will give me a $500K home with no mortgage. People don't seem to understand that a home is an investment.

Currently, age 31.

Oh part of the plan is not buying stupid things like H2s.

edit: Wife is a stay at home wife. Pregnant with the second. In 5 years, she'll go back to teaching. I kinda hope that when that happens, she'll just put all our excess cash towards the mortgage if it even exists.

I'm at 12% into my 401k. It's amazing the numbers i have gotten from running 40 year scenarios.

Hm, 21 here, got 4K in a CD and ~4K in savings/checking. I figure if I don't spend much and always put most of it away, I'll be fine. Plus, I'll probably never have to worry about supporting a wife and kids, either... (sniff) Besides, the Dems just took over; I'm sure they'll take care of me when I'm old. :)

Don't be too shocked, you have to factor in inflation. Assume $1 turns in 50 cents every 20 years.

All of the reports I ran used today's dollar as a baseline

Currently aged 21.

Roth IRA(Maxed every year since age 16) - 25% Emerging markets, 45% Small caps and 30% Index 500

I figure if I keep that up along with when I get a job, I'll be ok.

Exactly what I am doing. Currently, our investment is setup as follows:

Mine:
[*]$4k into IRA (VFINX)
[*]$5k into 401k (+$2k match)

Her's:
[*]$4k into 401k (+$2k match)

I plan to throw more into my 401k, but am going to pay off other debts prior to doing so. We also plan to open an IRA for her and max it out by the end of next year. Currently, we are putting away $17k/year, but I want to get that up to about $25k/year by the end of 2007.

I'm 25, she's 24.

That's great! I didn't get started until I was 32. I'm 36 now and the wife and I have been playing catch-up - we've managed to set aside over $100k in the last 4 years. I wish I would have started way back when......
