*!WOOT!* is an expression of extreme happiness. Imagine someone telling you some really, really great news. You'd kinda jump up and down and yell, right? Sorta like "Woo-hoo!" (Homer voice) except "Woot" is more acceptable here at AT. Hope this helps.

I learned recently that it is a derivation of the word "root". When a hacker broke a box back in the day (i.e. they achieved root), they used to exclaim "root"..... over time it became woot, which sounds a little more joyous. Can anyone confirm this?

w00t... last time I checked... stems from w00p, which was used as often as w00t, before w00t was used. w00p is the sound a llama makes. I guess a llama noise could also sound like w00t.

Anyway, that sounds like as good of an explanation as any. A little like an urban legend, but with a word like w00t, EVERY explanation is like an urban legend
