I have a Biostar M7NCG rev. 7.2 mobo, which has what looks like a non-standard SPDIF out header on the mobo.

    Manual says (notch on bottom):
all the way to the left: VCC5
    middle: SPDIF_out
all the way to the right: ground

I have a SPDIF bracket from my MSI K8NGM2-FID whose manual says is wired as follows (again, notch on bottom):
all the way to the left: no connection
    middle: ground
all the way to the left: SPDIF

    What does "VCC5" stand for?

And what would happen if I just plug the MSI header in and it is wired incorrectly (will I damage the mobo or receiver?)

Is the VCC5 wire optional on a coaxial SPDIF bracket?

Reason I ask is that MSI manual says SPDIF header assignments are: No connection ground SPDIF

No usually a 5V wire would not be optional...can you direct me to what you are talking about?

    <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="ftp://ftp.biostar-usa.com/manuals/M7NCG%20400/M7NCG400manual.pdf"><a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="ftp://ftp.biostar-usa.com/manuals/M7NCG%20400/M7NCG400manual.pdf">ftp://ftp.biostar-usa.com/manuals/M7NCG%20400/M7NCG400manual.pdf</a></a>

See page 5, then page 13.

I'm hoping to use the coaxial SPDIF bracket I got with my MSI K8NGM2-FID, but pin layout according to manual is different.

EDIT: also, should those pins work for an optical output as well as a coaxial SPDIF output?

And what do the connections on whatever bracket you are using look like?
