for example, what string does this create?

$query .= "AND r.region_name = \"$regionName\"";

is it just "AND r.region_name = "$regionName" ?

some background info if necessary... $regionName is a query string

You can just use single quotes inside of queries, makes it a bit easier (no ugly backslashes)

$query .= "AND r.region_name = '$regionName'";
