What does this saying mean?

"Stay above the potatoes and below the corn"

Some old man told me that after I helped him load some heavy boxes into his car the other day when i was leaving best buy. I asked him what it means and he said to just think about it. ????

Maybe "above the potatoes" means to stay alive, like above ground? Not sure about the corn comment though...
