"Stay above the potatoes and below the corn"

Some old man told me that after I helped him load some heavy boxes into his car the other day when i was leaving best buy. I asked him what it means and he said to just think about it. ????

Maybe "above the potatoes" means to stay alive, like above ground? Not sure about the corn comment though...

Probably something along the lines of "Keeping an even Keel".

Don't get too high, or too low.

That kinda thing.

Don't get "high on your horse" or "down in the dumps".

Take the moral/social/cultural middle ground.?

Potatoes = Peasants Corn = Elite ?

Don't hang down low and don't rise above the corn so as to be a target?

I dunno, lots of interpretations.

LOL

While we're at it, here are a couple of my favorites.

"You look like a turtle humping a football."

"Fits like socks on a rooster."

The old guy could've just said, "Keep it real, homey."
A few less words, and still the same message.
