What does the "U" mean?

Hi,

The new/used system I am waiting for delivery on, uses PC3 10600U ram. Does the U mean unbuffered? I never saw this before, and, after testing new system when it arrives, if it is healthy, I will immediately upgrade the ram, so I need compatibility info.

Edit: all the ram I have ever used, bought... has been unbuffered. Thing was, I never once saw a letter U at the end of the identity of any. My other feeling was it might mean UNDEAD. (Kidding)

Update/Finale (Feign interest): Wanted to wait to get ram until system arrived and I could check it out, but saw what called out to me on eBay: 4GB kit 2X2GBs, Crucial, not their best but I trust Crucial; new Crucial safer than used Samsung or Kingston, I think......NEW in package... auction, and I lept in in the last 7 seconds and got it for $27.50 incl shipping. Saw nothing on Newegg this good a deal, tho we all luv them.

Saw online there was some issue with this Crucial line in DDR2, but all the reviews for the DDR3 in this line are off the hook excellent.

Din have a U, but I always thought all desktop ram was unbuffered, I think this will be just fine.

Most consumer desktop memory is unbuffered, correct. You should be totally fine as long as the motherboard supports that RAM configuration (I dont see why it wouldnt, some can be picky though).

Hi, Mushkins, and thanks for helping!

Almost positive the board does support it; so far never bought not compatible sticks (used sticks which died over time, but not not compatible ones), but I got nervous because of the price. And, can't tell from the pics, but I think these don't have the heat spreaders which most ram of this kind seem to. But not sure.

Deal was too good to pass up.

usually when they don't have heat spreaders, that means they are value Ram. This is no problem unless you wish to overclock your Ram. And quite frankly, there is no point of that.

ps, you can trust Kingston and other brands today as they have come a long way in durability

Thanks for this! And yes, this is a value line from Crucial! I have never OVERCLOCKED ANYTHING, CPUs, ram, humans.....NUTHIN. First, I am not a gamer, but, however irrational, I think it's mean, and we all know heat is the enemy of everything puter-related! Accept & respect what u can afford; U can afford i7 Ultimate Extreme, awesome. Short of that, CHILL and respect what the chip or the sticks were made to do by default without PUSHING THEM. Same deal with humans playing sports and PEDs.

I learned important stuff from yr post.....thanks so much!!!!!!

OK, I just looked at the pic in the ebay listing again, and now have a prolly insane question: is that a giant heat spreader on the sticks? Like one, long one? (I SAID, prolly insane, but seriously, what is that???)

the RAM are covered, but not by much. More for looks I'd say but they also have a very good rating 4.8/5.0

Nothing at all wrong with this RAM, should work great

At least, re these sticks I am waiting for delivery on, I am now relieved, esp re the RATING you shared. That......was amazing.:wub:

As far as sticks being covered for looks as opposed to for heat spreading.....seriously, who is going to see them once they're seated, dust mites?😱😎

Update: Believe it or not, the huge, long dark thingy covering them, really is ceramic! and one one side, it is attached to what looks like underlying small square thingies.

Sticks functioning fine.....but I have no clue why those things are there on budget line sticks.
