What does the thick black knob in my chair do?

I've never figured out what this knob does. I have a lever for adjusting height, but I have a black knob you turn underneath that adjusts something. I've turned it max one way, and max the other, and can't tell the difference, although I know something is being adjusted.

What is it?

My chair has 2 options for tilt. Bolt in bolt out. Bolt in there is no resistance and it's fixed, bolt out it goes all the way back with no resistance.

Ejection seat...NOT ejaculation seat.

The black knob under the seat controls the spring tension on the tilt feature of the chair.

It takes a lot of turning before it makes any significant difference.
