What does the prosecutor get out from winning a case?

Pardon my ignorance of the justice system. Prosecutor is the one who represents the government and is the one on the governments side on the charges. So if a person is charged with murder, the prosecutor is the one who is going to side with the government.

Ok so, my question is, what does the prosecutor get out of winning the case? I have heard stories about the prosecutor making up facts, planting evidence, getting false witnesses and all sorts of illegal tactics to win the case. What exactly is the prosecutors benefit in all of this? Her/his salary isn't dependent upon winning the case, like the defense lawyer.

I am sorry you are ignorant of the justice system. Mimendo gave you the most succinct answer you'll find.

Not to be off topic, but succinct should be the word of the day. It's a gooder.

A job is correct.

I think that's one of the reasons for so many plea bargains. Less work for the prosecutor, and the prosecutor can claim a high rate of convictions. Personally, it pisses me off when someone is offered a plea bargain when their guilt is obvious - i.e. caught on video tape or something.

being a prosecuter is actually pretty kick back compared to being defense. had a speaker come in, he used to do corporate and defense law and said it wasn't worth it. only a few make it big and most make crap for money. but as a prosecuter you get more respect and if your good you become an assistant da or maybe a da someday.

haha i asked him how much he was making doing corporate...about 250k/year. he then added that he only had 7 days off in the year including sundays and working 10hour days. when he calculated out his hour earning he was only making 9-10 bucks an hour. hahaha

Aside from the job thing, there's also aspirations of running for political office.

And we all benefit from criminals being punished.
