Hello Ralli! Very interesting question indeed.

Here's one site that tries to explain it. I pulled up 'numerology 666' and got quite a few sites.

And yes, the ancient, symbolic meaning of the number 666 would fall under the category of numerology.

This paragraph from that site confused me :

As seven is the number for completion, 6 is incomplete. The number 6 is scripturally said to be the earthly mind of man and the number 666 is a tripled 3 and symbolizes man making himself God. The 3 different Greek words used in Revelation for 666 were the 3 different Greek words for 600 and 60 and 6, not 6 + 6 + 6. History has shown us that it is useless to try to identify the Anti-Christ before the time by using 666, there are just too many ways to make people fit and they can't all be the Anti-Christ. Scripture does not say that if you find 666, you have found the beast but him that has understanding should count the number of the beast. After you have found the beast, you can calculate that his number is 666.

Wasn't there a post like this a few weeks ago? I only remember because someone why 666 was the number of the beast, and I replied in my usual smart-assed way by saying that 667 is the Neighbor of the beast! :p

Robert Heinlein had an interesting explanation in his novel "The Number of the Beast": That it's really 6 to the 6th power, to the 6th power, or 10314424798490535546171949056, the total number of alternate realities accessible via the device Jake invented, and that he and Zeb and Deety and Hilda used to do interesting things.

Indeed. 666 is the number of man, not of the devil. But, as a 'beast' is of course not the 'good' side of man, it must be his 'evil' (devil) side.... blah blah blah... Basically it is bullsh!t.

I read a newspaper article about tattoos. They interviewed one guy who got the UPC bar code from a can of Milwaukee's Best tattooed on his arm so that when people asked him what the bar code meant, he could truthfully tell them it was the mark of the beast.

That's what I thought at first, but I think he is talking about Linux. In linux, if you type "chmod 700" that would give the user read, write, and execute permissions. I THINK that is what he is talking about.
