what does the MIME type (?) .vnd standfor?

in the MIME types, what does vnd stand for? i tried to do a google but have been unsuccesful

The "vnd" prefix indicates standards owned or otherwise controlled by a Vendor. It is part of a hierarchical name space specified in RFC 2048.

thanks for the reply,

what are the other prefixes. this appears to be a top level prefix. i guess that there are standards controlled by govt and they would have some other prefix?
