What does the future hold for the FPS genre?

Sometimes i will be playing through a highly acclaimed FPS, and tell myself this and that could've been done better, this would've made the scene more intense, etc. the following is a list of things i'd like to see in the FPS genre, feel free to add to the list.

1. More half-life 2 esque puzzles(and of course the physics). No more "off/on buttons" lets say you are sent to upload top secret information to a thumb drive. Instead of just finding the glowing switch and hitting 1 key. Maybe in the game, you actually access a real FTP that the developer sets up for the game.

2. More hand/arm movements. I cant believe we've been in the FPS genre so long and in some games we never see the playable character's arm or hand! only a gun! When i open a door i dont want to just press the e key and the door slings open.I would like to see the character holster his weapon and actually see the character's hand turn the knob and open the door. Maybe even control the speed that you open the door to shield yourself from the enemies in the room.

3. When the character takes a massive blow, i think it would be cool for the game's camera to pan down to the wound(his stoumach for instance) and see bullet holes through his shirt and a shredded bullet proof vest.

4. Weapon jams. Very rarely, you're weapon will jam. The game will automaticlly show the character banging the gun with his fist or against his leg, wall, etc. Although thats not a realistic way to correct the problem, it adds to the game.

2) Splinter Cell

3) Who cares?

4) Realism is not having 2 billion pieces of leftover ammo lying around that happens to fit your gun.

pretty graphics with the same rehashed gameplay that will get watered down after the first patch to make the skill gap more narrow so that the n00bs stop crying because they suck.

I like 2, 3 sounds distracting but I like the concept. I just want more envirnomental interactivity. At least HL2 made progress in that area, whereas doom3 had the capability but ignored it in design.

You have to remember though, realism != fun. It would be realistic, for instance, if your character had to take a dump every once and awhile and you'd crap your pants if you didn't attend to it. However, I think we can all agree that that component should be left out of most FPS...maybe it belongs in a scat hentai game or something, but NOT in the FPS.

Phillips has something unique for FPS or any game... Its an enviroment simulator that can control the lights, temperature, i.e. mood settings. So when you walk by a hot reactor in doom 3 the temp will go up... etc

there is a game on ps2 that did a lot of what you are asking. you would see their hands pick up the ammo on the ground. they would crouch down to pick it up. they pick it up and you see them put it in their pocket or something. you could also do cartwheels and some other wierd stuff. you would get shot and you would see your guy move as though he's in pain, and you are in the first person view the whole time.

honestly, it made the game a lot less fun. it was just too realistic and it seemed to slow down things. like picking up 5 clips after you take out a buncha guys, and seeing that animation over and over. it just started to get more annoying than anything.

also, this is the only FPS game that EVER gave me a headache while playing because the camera movement was "realistic" in this sense.
