What does the future hold for AMD???

Hi Guys...

I currently have the following rig:
Asus K7v
700Mhz classic oc'd to 850
768MB PC133

I'm feeling the need for more speed, but I haven't kept current on the processor lifecycle, so I'm looking for some help...

I'm targeting a thunderbird at 1-1.2Ghz and will probably play around with the clock a little...

Anyway, it looks like I have three choices:

1. Get a mobo that supports tbirds & uses pc133 (a7v133?) (200fsb or 266fsb?)
2. Get a mobo that supports tbirds & uses DDR (8k7a / ad11)
3. Wait for a mobo that supports current tbirds & the new palomino?

I'm concerned because it seems like SocketA tbirds are going to top out around 1.5Ghz which doesn't leave me much room for upgrading the chip... basically, what mobo will give me the longest legs in regards to dropping a new cpu in later?

Thanks!

Go for the new Abit KG7 as it supports the Palimino core (A4) off the bat. Its DDR and will give you a secure upgrade path for the future. The next core coming out will be the Thoroughbred then the Clawhammer. You should be good for awhile.

Well...if i were u...i'd just get the epox 8k7a...it's a 120 bucks and add to that some ram...50 bucks from crucial. I know that palo's will be hot and not to mention a lil expensive when the first hit the desktop market, so i wanted something that will last me a year at most, so i invested in a AYHJA 1.33 and OC'd it to 1633 just to try OCing Amd's for the first time. I know palo's will be good chips...but i kinda wanna sit back and watch what ppl are doing with these b4 i eventually by one. Until then, i'll have my tbird to keep me company. So ya, if you're like me...you're not patient and you want speed now! hehe...go for it...epox is a great board and makes OCing easy as pie, stable too. Best of luck to you and enjoy ur new tbird...cuz i sure am.

Given the price of DDR these days (same price as PC133) and the speed advantage (even if it's small), go with DDR. tbird 1.33 + epox 8k7a is your best bet for the next two or three months.

Don't worry about future upgrade potential built in, especially with DDR boards, as newer and better revisions will come out. With PC's, waiting for the next compatable thing is a never ending wait. Get what is out today, and what works great today. Even though you can get a DDR board for the same as non-DDR, I would stick with non-DDR until DDR becomes as well established, and the motherboards have gone through a few revisions to get the kinks out.

I agree with both Bry and RobTV...

I wont even build pc133 systems anymore unless specifically asked by customer who may wish to use existing memory along with it.

Go DDR and get epox which will have full support (has some moderate support already) in do time. Get a tbird 1.2 at www.tcwo.com for 101.00 and sit back and wait for the palominos (desktop that is) to come out and drop a bit in price. At current settings they will most likely come in at 300-260 bucks.
