It sounds like you're agreeing that assimilation is the problem - then why are you asking if multiculturalism is the problem? Posing that question implies that the problem may lie in inviting tolerating any other cultures, be they italians, asians, cubans, etc. as well. The fact is, it's not destructive to a country's well being as long as the immigrants at least on a basic level subscribe to the ideals of their parent country - I would say most legal immigrants of this country do.

Multiculturalism impedes assimilation. And when I say multiculturalism I don't mean the existence of multiple cultures I mean the doctrine of promoting multiple cultures within one's borders.
