What does the "Enhance Chipset Mode" option in the BIOS do?

I'm using an Abit SR7-8X. In the BIOS, there is an field called "Enhance Chipset Mode," and the options are: Fast, Normal, Fixed at 83mhz, Fixed at 144mhz.

Can someone explain how changing this field affects performance/stability?
