What does the "CE" on most electronic products stand for?

There is an almost moon-shaped "CE" that I see on many products, both on the box and on the back of the equipment. What does it stand for? I know UL stands for underwriters laboratories.

Yeap it's for the EU...

Next, in 1989, the ?New Approach? was supplemented by the "Global Approach" to standardization. This provided in particular for the establishment of procedures to assess the conformity of products with the requirements of the Directives. It also provided for the affixing of CE marking to such products. Council Decision 93/465/EEC (Official Journal of the European Union, L 220 of 1993, p. 23) defined CE marking. This legislation, as amended, applies across the board to all "New Approach" products.

Someone asked this in my electronics class last night. The teacher did not even know, just some sort of approval

If you want to sell an electronic device in Europe, you'll want to get a CE mark. In the US it's UL, and in Canada it's the CSA.

...at my work we have a product undergoing these tests right now.

Also, if you're in England and you order a steak, make sure it has the British Stamp of Excellence. Just specify "BSE" and the waiter will know what you mean. ;)
