I've noticed (sic) in a couple of autobiographies i've read, mostly in Hitter (biography of Ted Williams). Was just reading the overclockers.com review of anandtech's book here and was wondering what (sic) meant or refered to or whatever.

The editor puts it there to show that they are aware there is a spelling mistake in the original document.

"The mann [sic] thought it would be fun to go for a walk."

EDIT: Using sic is cool and people will think you're cool for it :)

It means that the editor has detected an error (can be a grammatical/spelling error) and has left it in it. (sic) is used to notify other people that the editor is aware of the error.

Well I can go back to bed now, I have learned something new. :) Just another person that always wondered what that meant but never took the time to look it up.

(sic) makes more sense as "spelling in context" if you ask me, but that's an assumption.

I was wrong - this is what the acronym dictionary says - "not an acronym: the Latin for "thus", used to explain that the original author really did make the mistake as shown"

It's not an acronym for anything fellas, it's Latin. "Thus" or "So" depending on how you translate it.
